about
“Dave Chappelle Is Wrong (Beef With God)” fuses Shirt’s airtight flow and wordplay with an off-kilter groove. Serving as the opening track of the new album, the song highlights bold ideas from the artist regarding the times we live in, covid, mass shootings, influencer culture, and traumatic upbringings. “Beef With God” is meant to articulate the larger idea of challenging even your heroes. Engaging with the phrase conceptually, adding it to the title of the work, and tagging the account on Instagram of the same name, we learn @BeefWithGod is actually an art and choreography practice and moniker by Shirt’s friend, the artist Renata Pereira Lima. Influenced by notions of postmodern dance, Beef With God are Guerilla-style interventions by Renata executed in the form of live dance performances and happenings, that Shirt has been particularly inspired by for some years now. Speaking directly to Dave Chappelle’s recent statements and comedy routines referencing the LGBTQ community as well as cancel culture at large, Shirt sends a message straight from the heart to the iconic comedian, rapping, “I might’ve learned to fight ‘fore I learned to talk––I got a slick mouth, you already know it. I don’t wanna hear your musty Chappelle opinion. I don’t need your review, I read a million. I’d tell that man to his face: You hurt people and put people in danger. Simple as that, the jokes put people in danger. The dummies think it’s funny. I think you should be more careful who you make comfy––I don’t care about the money.”
lyrics
Verse one
The ones willing to kill everyone is ones in charge
Scary
I just do the bars, you won’t catch me in bars
How many thought covid was sars? Normal people to sports stars We love looking at times people lived in but this is ours
I might be from Queens, don’t ask ‘bout Nicki Minaj
Don’t ask about her, don’t ask about Nas
Ask me ‘bout Tremaine
I seen Nas do “Rewind” in the rain, we been lied to our whole lives I seen it with my own eyes
I need the Ferrari that’s Jony Ive’s
Siri, show me my demise
They make me an influencer, I’m making you one, what’s your size?
I can’t think of a better way to do it, what you surmise?
They sooner cut the horses, what a surprise
Don’t act surprised, don’t be one of those guys
Really listen to all that underlies
I roll the dice like at the Taj and improvise
Never been into people who pick sides
Never been into pissing games ‘bout dick size
My shit bigger anyway
I look ‘em dead in the face when they tell me I couldn’t do it and did it any way Show me the proof right now yours is the better way
I grew up, to me ‘Kiss is Hemingway
Don’t make me take a trip down memory lane
It may as well been MMA
(May as well been MMA)
Verse two
I might’ve learned to fight ‘fore I learned to talk
I got a slick mouth, you already know it
I don’t wanna hear your musty Chappelle opinion I don’t need your review, I read a million
I’d tell that man to his face: You hurt people and put people in danger Simple as that, the jokes put people in danger
The dummies think it’s funny
I think you should be more careful who you make comfy
That’s just me, I don’t care about the money or the
Verse 3
Since you don’t know me and you probably should
I’m not one these niggas just got to Hollywood
You gon’ learn to respect my mind or my right hook
Look, everybody saying you gotta do it by the book ain’t never did shit I can tell by how it look
Remember these words: ain’t one right way to do it Sometimes you gotta do it just to see how to do it

If I had to compare this album to any in Apollo Brown's list of albums, it would be "Dice Game" , the production here is super soulful, bleak and emotional at times, Philmore Greene is so genuine lyrically on here, here he is honest, detailed, Pessimistic at times, when it comes to speaking on his surroundings and upbringing, their is a strength you carry through experience, this album is much needed, an artist translating his true soul into the Art. markmcauley1 (Strictly Hip-Hop Spot)
